subject: How Much Time Is Spent On Social Media [print this page]

According to a recent report by The Nielsen Company, people spent an average of five and a half hours on social media accounts such as Face book and Twitter in December 2009.

In the US, there was an 82% increase in the use of social media from the previous year. A year earlier, a typical US user only accessed social networks roughly three hours in December 2008. Australians topped the study with their social media use averaging 6 hours 52 minutes on social networks. The report looked at the usage of social networks such as Face book and Twitter of users in 10 countries including the US.

According to the report Face book was the number 1 social networking site for the month of December. Out of those social media included in the study, 67% of global users of social media visited Face book in December 2009. The social network had 206.9 million unique visits for December 2009.

What do all of these mean for your business? Because social media use is growing, it means that companies should really consider taking advantage of social media for reaching the public.

With users spending an average of six hours on social networks and with their social media use continuing to increase, social media present companies with effective and affordable means to sell and reach a market.

Now it also means that for greater connectivity, people are spending more time on social networks. If you want greater connectivity with the public, you also need to spend time on social media. Depending on who will work on your social media account, the time invested on social media marketing can be very expensive or very affordable for your business.

Now you need to evaluate what uses you want social media to have in your business and how much you want to invest in using them. You can tweet, update blogs, update your social media accounts on your own or you can hire someone else to do these tasks for you. What you intend to gain from using social media will determine if you should do everything yourself or hire someone with affordable fees to do the tasks for you.

You may also want to study the different social networks and see which network will help you reach your target market. You should also consider hiring someone with experience with using social media so that you can really gain advantage from there at a shorter time.
