The Middle Ages included quite a bit of superstition and belief in magic. The traditions of this time were built on mythical stories of evil versus good. As a result, charm beads known as amulets were often worn to ward off evil spirits and to bring good luck. During this time, charms were used to heal and to protect. In order to bear a symbol of such powers, materials were designed into the gods of the times.
Intact charms that have endured the ages were worn by the Middle Age noble classes. This is because long-lasting precious metals such as pure silver and gold were only affordable to the elite. However, evidence of charms made of lower quality materials have been preserved. Such amulets were worn on belts and on a wide variety of jewelry.
The strong belief in the power of these amulets and charm beads was so prevalent during this time that they were even given to children as protection from evil spirits, disease, and other harmful influences.
Unfortunately, superstitious beliefs of the time were taken advantage of by fraudulent charm sellers. This included Middle Age religious institutions. Making money from such charms was an easy task during this era as diseases, most notably the Black Plague or Black Death, ravaged medieval Europe. Many cases of pneumonia, typhoid and other illnesses led to the irrational belief that evil spirits were the cause. Even mental illness was rampant during this time. All of this caused the people of this age to seek answers beyond what their doctors were able to provide.
Foods such as "Agatha bread", grapes, and kale were eaten in certain quantities and at particular times of year in the belief that they would bring good luck. Such traditions continue today.
These traditions do not seem so far fetched when one considers that many of these practices still take place around the world. In fact, the 21st century abounds with traditions first implemented by fearful inhabitants of the Middle Ages. With the help of the church at that time, sacramental objects and symbols were used during the Middle Ages. Many of these are still used. While these sacramentals are reminders of one's faith, they continue to serve as objects which ward off bad luck and evil spirits.
Charm beads resembling the Middle Age symbols can be found in many historical museums. In addition, such charm beads are continually produced today for those with an interest in such symbolism.
