Have you experienced eye irritation? It usually comes in the form of red and itchy eyes. You may feel a burning sensation and sensitivity to the light. You may also feel your eyes getting either excessively watery or dry, or you may experience a blurred vision and a difficulty when reading.

You must keep in mind that your eyes are delicate organs. It is important that you take care of them. A benign eye irritation may develop into an infection or ocular irritation if left untreated.

A number of reasons may be causing the eye irritation you are experiencing, such as indoor heating, dry or smoky environment, dust particles, seasonal allergies or eye makeup. Other factors may also cause eye irritation, like unhygienic habits when wearing contact lenses, smoking, poor protection when in hazardous work environments, excessive computer use and reading or driving at night.

Common eye disorders come in many forms, such as dry eye syndrome, scratched cornea, blepharitis, or conjunctivitis. It's best that you consult with your ophthalmologist so you get proper prescription and treatment option. Medications come in varied forms as well. These include ointments, antibiotic eye drops, antihistamines, saline rinses, artificial tears, etc.

You may already have heard about homoeopathic remedies. Natural remedies are safe and gentle and you can use them on the eye area without worries. Certain ingredients provide relief to symptoms of irritated eyes, like Graphites, Merc sol, Psorinum, Pulsatilla and Euphrasia. If it is calming and soothing relief that you are looking for, you should go look for ingredients like Arg nit, Agrimony and Calendula.

There are many ways by which you can prevent eye irritation:

Always keep your hands clean. Wash them frequently and thoroughly. This is to help you make sure that you don't irritate your eyes when you rub or touch them.

Make sure that you keep your contact lenses well maintained. Watch out for expiration dates and make sure you change them when you have to.

Keep your eyes moist and free of particles by blinking frequently.

Wear eye protection sunglasses to shield your eyes from pollutants.

Make sure that you take off your contact lenses before you sleep.

Use a bag of frozen peas or a moist facecloth to apply cold compresses on your irritated eyes.

As much as possible, refrain from using your air conditioner as they dry your eyes. This is true even when you are asleep.

Use saline rinses or artificial tears to relieve your irritated eyes.

Apply makeup with care and make sure that you don't use heavy mascara, liquid pencils and glitter on your eyes.

If you are working in a hazardous environment, make sure that you wear necessary protection, like goggles, face shield, welding helmet and eyeglasses.

Use slices of cucumber to relieve and rejuvenate your tired and irritated eyes.

Stop smoking as it causes your eyes to become dehydrated and sore.

Eye protection is something that you shouldn't take for granted. Take extra care and go the mile to keep your eyes in good shape. It's true what they say, you only truly realise the value of your healthy eyesight when you lose it. You would not want to have to experience this first hand as they are many ways of preventing or reducing the risk of eye damage.
