Biogas from deoiled cake of Jatropha

I have seen this technologyin the CSIR Technofest 2010, showcased by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, New Delhi, at India International Trade Fair during November 14-27, 2010 New Delhi, India. I understand that " Biodiesel from deoiled cake of Jatropha" was developed by Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute, Durgapur, India.

Biogas as a renewable energy source and Jatropha has been identified as the most promising source for production of biodiesel. But, disposal of seed cake of Jatropha, being toxic in nature, is one of the major problems being faced by biodiesel producers across the world. Seed cake, mostly biodegradable, is not a problem rather it is a big asset. Thus, use of deoiled cake of Jatropha as a feed stock for biogas production with optimized quantity of cattle dung can help in environment friendly disposal of waste, generation of fairly good amount of fuel gas and manure of excellent quality (rich in N P K content). Moreover, there is no regulation related to deoiled cake handling, simple hassle free operation, no dirty hands, needs less water compared to animal wastes and needs less digester volume & less retention time, thus, cost comes down. Because of the residual oil and the high protein content of the oil cake, its calorific value is much greater than that of starch from cereal grains, rhizomes, tubers or cattle wastes. Biogas is utilized for house hold cooking and lighting purpose, running of gensets (400 VA to 4 MW), and running of engines (1.5 to 5 hp) etc. Keeping these things in view, one 6 m Biogas Plant has been designed and developed specifically to be operated on deoiled cake of Jatropha. The process parameters for optimum gas production have been standardized. The produced biogas is being used for cooking in MERADO canteen and running one genset to produce electricity as back up supply to 10 nos of street lights.

Biodiesel production is fraught with the problem of disposing jatropha cakes. The major part of deoiled jatropha cake is biodegradable and can easily be converted into biogas. The MERADO-Ludhianac centre of CSIR-CMERI, in collaboration with the Medors Biotech Pvt. Ltd., has successfully demonstrated the use of jatropha cakes for production of biogas.
