subject: Tips For Dining With Toddlers [print this page]

Taking your toddler out to a restaurant is a gamble. A person can't predict which way he or she will act. Here are some ways to make sure you are able to have a pleasant experience while dining.

If it will be your first time dining with your toddler, begin by eating at a fast food establishment. This way, a person can get an idea of how their child will act in public. Dining patrons there are typically used to children being noisy and running around.

Dining with your toddler after he or she has had a nap and had a diaper change is best. The child won't be fussy and hopefully won't have to be changed again during one's meal. Make sure the restaurant does have a changing table though. A person does not want to have to change their child's diaper on the floor of the bathroom.

Make sure the restaurant you choose to eat at is family friendly. Dining at a restaurant that does not typically allow children can result in dirty looks from other patrons. A family should choose a restaurant that is used to the behavior and noise of a toddler.

Come prepared with some toys for your child. If one's toddler likes to draw, bring a coloring book and some crayons. Try to get them to play on their own so that you can converse with your dining companion. Toys that a child hasn't played with in a while work best.

Remember to take your diaper bag since a person should be prepared for anything. Bring your child's cup and also some snacks. Also, a person should not feed their child before going out to eat. Although a person may think that their child won't want to eat while dining out, they will. If a child sees food that their parents are eating, they will want to eat too. It is best to dine out with the child during their normal mealtime.

If by chance your child is acting up and won't calm down, make sure you can make a quick getaway. Don't try to bribe your child or bargain with them. This will only lead to more behavioral problems later on.

Dining out is a process. Sometimes a person's child may be an angel and other times he or she could be extremely fussy. Take a deep breath and know that you are prepared for whatever comes your way.
