subject: Catching Asperger's Syndrome Early [print this page]

Asperger's Syndrome is a problem with the brain that falls under the classification of PDD (Pervasive Developmental Disorder). A child who is suffering with Aspergers Syndrome will have trouble socially and not have much interest in activities. When an activity is found that interests a child they will likely find comfort in repeating it, over and over.

Asperger's is similar to Autism. The main differences are that children with Asperger's have average to above average intelligence and are not impaired when it comes to language or helping themselves. They are likely to have a good vocabulary and speak the language just fine except that their speech will be in monotone.

Kids who have Asperger's Syndrome may or may not be antisocial. Learning the socialization skills, that we take for granted, is never easy for them. They end up having extreme difficulty making friends and getting along with peers.

Boys are much more likely to get Asperger's Syndrome than girls. There has been no cure found for this condition. It is a lifelong condition. If a good treatment plan is followed the quality of life will be much better. It is possible to live a normal work life especially if the job does not require people skills.

The cause of Asperger's is related to bad genes that run in families. Problems in the family or being a bad parent does not contribute to this syndrome. Before Asperger's shows up there are often 'triggers' that show up out of nowhere. A sudden intolerance to certain foods might show up or a digestive problem will suddenly appear out of nowhere.

Asperger's Syndrome can often be controlled with herbal medicines. Herbs that are often beneficial include: St. John's Wort, Chamomile, Melissa Officinalis or Passiflora. Make sure you talk with your doctor or homeopath before starting a treatment regimine. The type of pill you give to your child might contain a certain combination of herbs in order to have the desired effect. The right kind of holistic treatment plan will aim to address the underlying problem instead of simply treating the symptoms.

If your child is diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome make sure that you learn everything you can about it. Focusing on your child's strengths can really help them to excel in life. If they develop a strong interest in a particular subject then make sure you encourage them by providing reading and learning materials on that subject. Someday, they may even turn it into a career.
