Voltage regulators are being used to minimize noises in electrical current by increasing or decreasing the voltage input to continuously produce regulated voltage.
It is important that we use voltage regulators to maximize the lifespan of our electronic devices such as your computer. When it comes to computers, it is very important that you use voltage regulators to avoid the internal hardware from breaking. If the voltage that is being supplied to computer is high, this may cause damage to the internal components of the computer. So to avoid this event, using a reliable and durable voltage regulator is very necessary.
There are actually two major types of voltage regulators and they are linear regulators and switching regulators. The difference between the two is how they regulate the voltage.
With linear voltage regulator, the voltage is converted into a lower level so that it may be able to fit the required voltage level of the application. This type of regulator is also the most affordable one since they are easily available in the market. But when it comes to efficiency, linear voltage regulators are not efficient enough since the voltage that has been excessed is only converted into heat. But linear voltage regulators are very much efficient in reducing or minimizing the electrical noise that is why this type of regulator is much appropriate for noise-sensitive applications.
Switching voltage regulators are the ones that convert the level of electricity or voltage from being high to low and vice versa. For example, switching voltage regulators convert 220v current into 110v so that the devices which required lower voltage may be able to get electricity from it. But there are also disadvantages in using switching voltage regulators such as the high noise. Also, switching voltage regulators are more expensive are compared to linear ones.
