I thought of Claude Lelouche's C'tait un Rendezvous as the guttural growl of Johnny's sportscar spun into a trancelike drone, which then perfectly fused to Phoenix's Love Like A Sunset (parts of which form the film's score).
Johnny lives at the Chateau Marmont, that West Hollywood den of infamy, and after a particularly prodigious night on the sauce, tumbles down the staircase and breaks his hand.
So begins a period of glamorous house arrest, involving lazy days spent drinking and welcoming a pair of strippers into his room to twirl in slow-motion, in a sly nod to his superstar status, to The Foo Fighters' My Hero.
Weathered by age, Stephen Dorff's face has become wonderfully evocative. His forehead wrinkles give him an expression of perpetual, perplexed concern; as Johnny sits in his bed, watching his favourite strippergrams twirl in unison, he looks on, nodding vaguely, smiling hesitantly, a half-vision of the actor as superannuated old man.
Johnny concerns himself with the mundanities of superstardom: a stiff press call with his co-star (a prickly Michelle Monaghan), frequent angry anonymous text messages from spurned conquests, and an extended scene that perfectly captures the claustrophobia of a full-head cast (the results of which, an old age prosthetic, hint at that bedridden half-vision).
Pamela Stephenson once described how many of the celebrities she had treated in her practice as a clinical psychologist develop a strange condition in which, during their anonymous, tracksuit-wearing downtime, they become jealous of their celebrity selves.
