subject: Establish A Good Running Routine [print this page] A few years ago I decided to take up runningA few years ago I decided to take up running. I've never been much for an exercise routine and so I knew I'd have to be diligent I order to keep up and stay in shape. I decided to sign up for a few short races to motivate me and get me out there running and training every day. Now, after over 5 years of consistent running, I've learned a few lessons about how to get and stay motivated to run.
First, if you're a novice runner, pace yourself. You won't be able to run a marathon right off the bat. Make sure to set a reasonable and realistic schedule for yourself and stick to it. If you miss a few days, don't get too discouraged. Get back on your schedule as soon as possible and make sure that you're running at a pace and distance that you're comfortable with. It's important to push yourself, but over doing it early on can turn you against running over the long haul.
If you're finding you have a hard time building stamina, try an endurance drink or energy pills at first. Don't take too much for too long; just use enough to give you a little boost at the beginning of your training schedule. Also, get plenty of rest. You'll be amazed at how much farther you can run if you have a good night's sleep under you. Eat a good balance of fruits and grains and lay off the sweets and sodas. They will slow you don't and make it so you can't run as far.
Set a good goal for your new running schedule. Start small and work up to a sustainable work out routine. If you've been doing one mile a day, bump it up to just a mile and a half for a while. Increase your distance and speed gradually so your body has time to adjust. Running can greatly boost your health and overall feeling of well being. Talk to your doctor before beginning any major change in your exercise routine and make sure you're getting enough rest and eating well. If you set a pattern in your life for healthy exercise now you will be able to reap the benefits of good health for many years to come. There is no better feeling than knowing you're doing all you can to keep yourself healthy.
