Do not dare let this opportunity pass!Like a good sports team, a good rock band is a unit that is greater than the sum of its parts. That's very true for the Randy Rogers Band, which played the Independent on Thursday night. Appropriately clad in baseball hats, the band blazed through a two-hour, 25-song set that emphasized group chemistry and the support of the song rather than individual virtuosity.
That's not to say that the players don't merit recognition. Every member of the six-piece band is seasoned and highly accomplished. Violinist Brady Black stood out soloing with dead-on intonation and driving musical intention, somehow managing to look tough wielding a fiddle. Guitarist Geoffrey Hill stuck close to his recorded solos, but the thick tone of his Les Paul and his tasteful playing complemented Brady's flourishes. Drummer Les Lawless - "the man with the coolest name in show business," according to Rogers - along with bassist Jon Richardson and keyboardist Brian Keane rounded out the ensemble with warmth and an understated ease that always serve Rogers' compositions foremost.
Though relatively unknown to California audiences, the band has been active for a decade and has a major-label record deal with MCA Nashville and a strong following in and around its home state of Texas.
