Hives, medically termed as urticaria, is a common skin disorder that usually occurs due to some kind of allergies. It appears in the form of red, itchy, and slightly raised wheals or lesions and differs in size as well as shape, ranging from a few mms (millimeters) to several centimeters in length and thickness. Further, it can affect any part of the body including arms, face, throat, trunk, and legs. Above all, it can affect anyone regardless of their age, sex, and race. In most cases, hives mostly last five to 24 hours.

Causes of Hives

One of the prime reasons for the outbreak of hives is due to allergic reactions as a result of the intake of certain kinds of medicines and food items such as shellfish, peanuts, egg, and food colors. In some instances, conditions such as hay fever can be a cause for the development of hives on the skin surface. Apart from these, the onset of hives are also associated with insect bites, pet dandruff, and pollens. The disorder that leads to the weakening of immune system may also sometimes result in the development of hives. There are also situations in which hives may break out due to skins over exposure to sun light or cold. Above all, conditions including stress and depression can also be causative factors for the onset of hives.

Red or pink raised itchy skin bumps

Multiple hives

Weals with white spot in the center

Itching

Stinging or burning sensation

Swelling

Quickly changes its shape, size, and location

Types of Hives

Depending upon the nature of its occurrence as well as causes, hives may fall under any of the following categories such as:

Aquagenic Urticaria

Cholinergic Urticaria

Dermographism

Solar Urticaria

Vibratory Angioedema

Hives Treatment

In most cases, hives may disappear without any specific treatment. However, treatment becomes necessary if its symptoms are severe. The usage of antihistamines is one of the most commonly used options to treat as well as the severity of hives. Additionally, home treatments using natural herbs like aloe vera, alfalfa, ginseng, and Echinacea may be helpful to relieve the symptoms of hives.
