subject: Top 10 Must-have Networking Supplies [print this page]

Before you attend that next networking event or party, do not step outside your office without these must-have networking supplies. How many times do you meet people and you arent prepared? The biggest networking mistake people make is being unorganized.

Post the following checklist in a visible location. Replenish your supplies before you run out of them. Take a few minutes each week to make sure your briefcase or car is filled with these necessary supplies.

#1 Business cards Make sure you never leave home or the office without your business cards. Keep business cards in a business card holder and make sure they are easily accessible in your wallet or purse.

#2 Identification Make sure you always have your drivers license/ID with you. Some events require an ID for their check-in/registration

#3 Money Make sure you bring cash. If youre attending an event that requires a fee you dont want to look foolish because you forgot your wallet. Some events will take a check but its always better to carry cash with you. If you want to purchase books or products, its easier to pay with cash.

#4 Marketing materials Remember to bring any flyers, brochures and marketing materials that promote your products or services. Make sure to include at least one copy of your press kit. You never know if youll meet a media connection at a networking event.

#5 Pens and a notepad How many times have you walked out the door and you dont even have a pen or notepad? Make sure you always have a working pen and notepad to jot down notes, especially if you are listening to a speaker.

#6 Cell phone or PDA What would you do without your cell phone or PDA? When you make a new contact, you can easily add that persons contact information into your cell phone or PDA on the spot.

#7 Extra clothes How many times have you been at a networking event and someone accidentally spilled red wine on your white shirt? Keep an extra pair of professional clothes in your car or trunk. Also, if youre running late and dont have time to change into professional attire, you can change when you arrive at the event venue.

#8 Water bottle Most events supply guests with water, but if youre going to sit in a long presentation or meeting bring your own water bottle. Sometimes the air can be dry, and you may lose your voice if youre networking and talking to a lot of people.

#9 Toiletries For women, carry a small bag filled with cosmetics and a hair brush. For both men and women, include a small toothbrush and toothpaste in your bag. You can tidy up in your office before you walk out the door. Its important to look presentable and professional before you walk into the event.

#10 Glasses Make sure you bring your glasses with you to events. Youll look funny squinting at the screen or trying to read a persons business card.
