Looking for a Technical Job in New Zealand

There are several different ways to source engineering jobs in New Zealand. You can go online and see what engineering jobs have been advertised, look in the positions vacant column of the newspaper, or you can go through a technical recruitment agency.

Of the three, going through an agency is more likely to get you a good match for your abilities and experience.

When you apply for a job in answer to a newspaper advertisement there is usually only enough information about the company's needs to fill a small square. This does not give you much to go on and you may find that the position is not a good match for you. The trouble is that you usually don't find it out in so many words; you are not told that they need someone with different abilities and experience. All you know is that you keep on getting rejections or hearing back nothing at all. That is all very depressing, but firms do not have the time to tell hundreds of applicants just why they have rejected them.

But by going through an agency, all your skills and experiences will be much more closely matched with the positions available. The company who contacts the agency for possible employees will tell them in much more detail than can be fitted in a newspaper ad what skills are needed for their position. The agency then interviews you - and others who match the criteria. They know whether you would be the best match for the job. This saves a great deal of work on your part in searching for leads, sending out your resume and waiting for ages to hear the result.

So looking for a technical job in New Zealand need not be as hard as it sounds, especially if you are not actually in that country at the time. Going through a recruitment agency will give you the best edge.
