subject: How To Dress For Success For Women [print this page]

Your front window to the world is your imageYour front window to the world is your image. What you wear gives a message out for everyone to interpret:- it gives out a perception of your values, what you stand for, your level of confidence, your interests.

- Your values

- Your level of self esteem and confidence

- What you stand for

- Your interests

Do not be amazed about how much a person will read and take 'who they perceive you are' for granted from what you wear! There is so much that you are saying by your attire.

OK so your dress habit is not portraying the image you want to project?! No prob. Just change the way you dress. It is that simple.

Let's go through the steps.

1. The first step is to know how people are reading you from what you are currently wearing. Ask around from those who know you or even better watch the reaction you have on others and how they treat you.

It is not only about the clothes you wear but also how are you wearing them. Let me explain using the example of a T-Shirt - a plain T-Shirt with short sleeves and the length just covering the buttocks. You can wear the T-Shirt as is or... you chop the sleeves off and make it sleeveless, you wear it and then tie the bottom of the T-Shirt in a big knot above your waist showing your mid-riff and whilst you are at it, you cut the neck-line off a bit lower to show a bit more of your breast?? You get the idea. That is what I mean by 'how you wear your clothes'

2. Decide what image you want to project by the way you dress. Do you want to be seen as:

- someone who blends into whatever event you are dressing for

- someone who does not follow the rules

- intellectual

- artistic - hippie

- business like

- someone to be taken seriously

- someone who is rich

- someone who is poor

- flirty

- sporty

- rebellious

- someone who is successful ... and the list continues

3. Research how people who fit the category you have chosen dress generally. How do you do that? Search the internet, look at magazines, watch people around you, ask your friends....

4. Ensure that everything that you wear is communicating in relation to the image you have chosen.

Warning!!!! Be prepared to have others react to you based on the message you are giving. That can be a very good experience or can be a not so pleasant one. Experiment and have fun!

People will remember you by the first impression they have of you. It is said that a person takes less than 30 seconds to form a lasting impression on meeting someone for the first time.
