When it comes to my little chihuahua, there's nothing he would rather do then that. When I first brought him home, I wanted to make sure that I started teaching him early on. I wanted to start to train puppy to fetch since I thought that it would be a great form of exercise for him.
When I first started to train puppy to fetch, I would throw the ball, then he would instinctively go after it, but that was all. He would run to it then just kind of look at it. He wouldn't pick it up and he sure wouldn't carry it back to me. So I decided in order to train puppy to fetch, I would have to try out a couple of things.
So, one day that I would trick him, yes I would train puppy to fetch by tricking him into it. So, I bought two of the same toys. I showed him the first one and made sure I teased him with it a bit. I made sure that his eyes were glued on that toy then I threw it. He ran over and picked it up. Now in order to get him to come back to me, I called out him name so that he would look over at me.
I showed him that second toy and he ran right back to me. He wouldn't bring me that first toy though. So I just kept at it and eventually he started to bring it back to me.
