Most of the time, it is not that easy to find out, but if you do a little bit of research you can see which places are linking back to your competition and get your links that way. You see many times where the competition is creating their own ranking. They're building other portals that are bringing them high up in the search engines. It gives you a good idea of what you're up against. In the end, I see that I'll need x amount of links going to my website to out rank that website.
I tend to focus on article marketing. When I do this I don't go out and submit my articles to all of the directories, I'll just stick with the bigger ones. I like doing the articles because that helps me out with my high rankings. People take that article and post it on their website and point the URL back to your site.
