subject: You Can Cure Your Acid Reflux Causes And Their Symptoms [print this page]

Flowing back, tidal or ebbing is an apt dictionary description of reflux.

This is an excellent description of acid reflux causes and their symptoms; a flowing back - in this case from the stomach.

What happens in reality is that a good many folk get a burning feeling around the chest which goes up through the throat and into the mouth where it leaves a sour, ratheracidic, taste. This pain, or more usually just discomfort, is caused by stomach acid flowing back into the esophagus causing what we know as acid reflux or heartburn.

The best way to understand the esophagus is to think of it as a connector between the stomach and the mouth. At the stomach joining is the esophageal sphincter which is similar to a valve which lets partially digested food into the stomach. It then closes and prevents the digestive juices from the stomach going back into the esophagus.

Digestive juices are, in effect, enzymes and strong acids, produced by the stomach to digest food and although the stomach lining can protect itself against the digestive juices the esophagus is not quite so fortunate.

Therefore, should the digestive juices, remember enzymes and acids, flow back through the esophagus, the natural outcome is a burning sensation which usually happens if the sphincter is relaxed. Most folk in the Western world have attacks of acid reflux at some time or other (Christmas, Thanksgiving, in fact, any celebration) which is little cause for concern as they are normally transitory.

Nonetheless, if acid reflux persists it is well to book an appointment with your doctor because, if ignored, gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) may deteriorate and could well cause some damage to the esophagus. If this occurs the sufferer can find difficulty in swallowing and, in extreme cases, heightens the risk of cancer.

Inexplicably, despite all the damning medical evidence there are still millions of people addicted to smoking tobacco. Smoking tends to stimulate the creation of acid in the stomach which, in turn, stimulates bile salts to move from the intestine to the stomach. Consequently, stomach acids become much more dangerous by weakening the sphincter and slowing down the digestion process.

Those two twine scourges of the Western lifestyle, tobacco and alcohol, continue to crop up in many everyday ailments. There are other significant acid reflux causes which are fairly straightforward and include bending over too far and too quickly or at the other extreme, laying too flat in bed.

Those suffering from asthma and peptic ulcers are prime candidates for acid reflux symptoms. Acid reflux causes and their symptoms include pregnant women, but for different reasons, as they are often at risk of acid reflux which occurs around the third trimester. As baby grows and is pushed against mother's stomach, there is much pressure which causes food back into the esophagus. Doctors do not usually prescribe antacid medication in these cases but advise four or five smaller meals rather than the traditional three square meals a day.

If you are a normal healthy adult and begin to suffer the discomfort of acid reflux on a regular basis it's time to consult the experts. To get to the root of the problem it may well be that the best cure is a natural remedy for acid reflux which could involve a change of lifestyle and diet.
