subject: Weeding Your Garden Properly And Successfully [print this page]

There are a lot of gardeners that eagerly anticipate spring to start. Whether you are looking forward to spring to start as a seasoned gardener or you are going to be starting your first garden this spring you should prepare yourself for some hard work.

No matter how many seasons you have been gardening everyone is going to have to deal with weeds. There can be the bane of a gardener's existence if you do not take the time to understand them and work to get rid of them.

There are some people that have many preconceived notions about weeding that are incorrect. You have to understand what you are up against and what you can do to get rid of the weeds before you start weeding.

First you need to know that you cannot get rid of weeds permanently with one weeding. You have to mentally prepare yourself to be able to weed multiple times throughout the seasons.

You have to know that you have to weed multiple times. The weeding may get easier and easier but you will have to dedicate time to weeding nonetheless.

Some people think that weeds are really not all that harmful. This is another very false misconception.

Weeds can essentially strangle the plants that you have paid for and taken the time to plant and nurture. You should not let the weeds grow rampant because they are going to take away the sunshine and the water from your plants.

The roots of the weeds will take the water out of the soil that you are intending for your own plants. They will dry up the soil and leave your plants to dry.

Many of the roots of weeds are very aggressive. You should not leave the weeds to take over your garden.

If you do not weed all of your hard work and your money will go to waste. Do not underestimate the power of the weeds.

You should also make sure that you are taking the time to understand what kinds of weeds are prevalent in your area. The more weeds that you know and understand the easier it will be to conquer the weeds.

Before you even start to plan you should make sure that the area you are going to plant in is clear of weeds. You should do this a few weeks before you plant so that if more are going to grow you will be able to pull them.

When you first start to pull the weeds you may get frustrated because they may seem difficult. You should water the area down before you even start.

This may seem counter intuitive. You are not watering the weeds to give them nourishment but rather to loosen their roots.

When the soil is hard and dry it will make pulling the root of the plant out of the ground very difficult. If you only pull the surface part of the weeds out off of the weed you will have weeds growing back in no time.

After you have pulled as much of the root out of the soil as you possibly can you should try to turn up the soil. By turning the soil you may be able to find more roots in the soil.

Pick out as many of the weeds as you can but you will definitely miss some. By turning the soil you will also be bringing many nutrients that would otherwise be unavailable for your plants.

After you have adequately weeded the soil you should fertilize the soil. You can find a fertilizer that will work well with your specific plants that you plan on planting.

There are a lot of people that choose to plant the plants that will work the best with their environment. Depending on where you live the weather can dramatically effect what will and will not thrive in your garden.

After you have fertilized your soil you will be ready to start planting. If you are planting from seeds you will have a lot to take care of.

There are a lot of people that can get frustrated with seeds because there is so much progress that you will not be able to see. The seed will grow under the soil because they have to be strong before they break through the soil.

Gardening is a time consuming process. Getting rid of the weeds will be hard but it will also be very important that you do this so that you can enjoy the repercussions of a thriving garden.
