Nothing less than a nice solid set of cheap "powered" speakers. I bought these because I've been wanting something a bit more powerful than my TV's speakers. For the price the product is five star. My TV is in a smaller room and these sound great when set up properly. You will need some type of output (receiver, DVD player, etc) that puts out a 5.1 signal to achieve surround sound, but you can also just run a standard 2 channel stereo signal through it as well and still get a nice sound. I bought these specifically for use with my Xbox 360 (which puts out Dolby 5.1 via optical cable). I have the optical out on the console running into my Tritton AX360 5.1 system and the surround out on the Tritton running into the speakers. Great purchase, great sound!!
I bought the Coby speaker system to go with my TV. The TV volume was not loud enough for the room it is in. What I discovered is that this is not a 5.1 system when connected to a TV. It is just stereo. Although it worked, the volume was still to low. Although this may have been due to a weak TV signal out, my TV is only two months old so I doubt that is the case.
After moving the speakers to my computer, I was able to get 5.1 sound. But not without a little difficulty. First I had to buy more cables because the computer doesn't have RCA output jacks. After connecting it, initially I only had 3.1. The ultimate solution was to set my computers audio control panel for 7.1 so that I could get a signal to each speaker. After getting it to work, the sound quality is fine. Not great, but more than adequate unless you really want quality. In that case you will need to spend more money. The problems I encountered here are probably the fault of my computer rather than the speakers, but I wanted other buyers to be aware that setup may not be straightforward. Check your computer outputs and audio manager first and you may save some time. Or decide this isn't the right system for you.
This is a good speaker system in some uses. Not in others. When compared to a true home theater system the difference in cost makes this a good buy.
Very easy to set up, great sound in comparison to just the TV. Do wish it came with a remote, but cannot complain. Due to comments in other reviews we did purchase additional speaker wire and this saved us set up frustration.
