Keeping your kitchen in perfect working order takes a lot of time and effort. Often, you only notice youve been neglecting it when you have a big event on the horizon: some family visiting, or even when youve decided to sell your home. As everyone can tell you, theres not much you can get away with when youre facing some prospective home buyers. Two of the biggest tests will come in the kitchen and in the bathroom. While new cabinets and or countertops are always excellent ideas for renovation projects, you dont always have to be so bold to make an impact. Sometimes, it just takes a fresh perspective to get your kitchen looking special once again. Try these five ideas to get things started.

1. Make your mark quickly and personally. Its always great to have a team of master builders and designers poring over your house, but completely unrealistic when youre working with a budget. You can make an impact while keeping everything simple. Take some old chairs and toss them to the curb, or think about some new plants or spices to liven up the room. You can set a new tone immediately and feed off of it while you move forward with your project.

2. Enhance the room by trying to cut down on clutter. If your kitchen is being stifled by some furniture or cabinetry thats well past its prime, think of adding on by subtraction. Youll be amazed at the amount of space you can create when you remove a bunch of cabinets which you really arent using anymore. Whether or not you want to replace all of them is up to you. The room might be suited for minimal cabinetwork, creating a sleeker design.

3. Toy with different light sources. Targeting an inadequate source of lighting is a great approach for a renovation project. While most homeowners think of how different lights might do the trick, it may be a window problem. The original design may have included fewer windows than can realistically keep natural light flowing into the room. The only way to correct the problem is to add new windows. While the level of difficulty of such a project is rather high, the reward is at the top of the spectrum as well.

4. Before you go shopping, try to recycle. Everyone has a few purchases that dont work out right away. However, as time goes on, you might find that the table or lamp you couldnt quite fit in works perfectly with your new kitchen design. An old chest of drawers or desk could even be the right touch for a kitchen. Look through the attic first.

5. Thrift stores and flea markets can lead to some great finds. When your budget is not exactly robust, dont be afraid of the secondhand market. You might find exactly what you are looking for at a great price.
