David proved himself to be one of the anointed warriors of Israel. He did not fight in his own might but with the power of the Spirit. The Philistine commanders continued to go out to battle, and as often as they did, David met with more success than the rest of Sauls officers, and his name became well known (I Sam. 18:30, NIV).
The officers of Saul were also men of war, but David alone had more success than all of them, inflicting enormous damage on the Philistine armies. Now, the officers of Saul were part of Israel (the people of God), fully armed for battle. But they did not play a vital part in helping win the wars. In fact, David had more success than all of them.
Sauls army represents those in ministry who fight in the fleshmen of war that trust more in their skills and abilities than in the Holy Spirit. As a result, they lack Gods power. Sauls army demonstrated that they lacked the real thing by taking the following attitude: When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid (1 Sam. 17:11. See 17: 24).
Davids reaction to Goliath was the exact opposite, because he trusted in the power of the Holy Spirit. The devil does not respect our abilities, only the anointing of the Spirit. The anointed warrior does not fight in his own strength, rather in the strength of God; he learns submission to the influence of the Holy Spirit and becomes a powerful instrument in Gods hands.
Those who fight in the flesh make a lot of noise but lack results. Jesus said it clear: That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. (Jn 3:6). Only what is born of the Spirit works in the kingdom of God.
The apostle Paul taught that the weapons of God are not carnal but mighty through God (2 Cor.10:3-4). These weapons are powerful and effective to destroy spiritual strongholds. If our ministerial weapons are not mighty through God, our efforts, tenacity, and good intentions will be useless to deliver those in captivity.
The outward appearance of the warrior is not what counts either (When David killed Goliath, he didnt look anything like a soldier). What truly counts is the Spirit that works and moves in and with us. For they did not gain possession of the land by their own sword, nor did their own arm save them; but it was Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your countenance (Ps. 44: 3). It is not because of our sword or our might that we conquer the land. It is because of the power of Gods Presence.
Another problem of those who fight in the flesh is: they fight battles trying to win. On the other hand, the anointed warrior fights in a battle that has already been won. Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it (Col. 2:15). So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, It is finished! And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit (Jn. 19:30).
Whatever we do in ministry must declare the triumph of the cross. Every human effort that exalts and crowns itself above Calvary is blasphemy against God and an insult to the blood of Jesus. The Son of God already won the victory. The defeat of the devil is an act finished on the cross, a legal contract nothing can be added or taken. It is finished!
Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two edged sword in their hand, to execute vengeance on the nations, and punishments on the peoples; to bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron; to execute on them the written judgmentThis honor have all His saints. Praise the Lord! (Ps. 149:6-9).
Anointed warriors move in the anointing of the Holy Spirit; exalt the Lord with their voices and execute vengeance upon the enemy with the sword of the Spirit the Word of God (Eph. 6:17). They bind principalities with chains of iron and execute the justice decreed on the cross. Anointed warriors celebrate and declare the victory of the resurrected Christ, who sits at the right hand of the Father, far above every principality, power, might, dominion and with all things under His feet.
If you are in ministry, whatever your mandate or calling is, consider David and the army of Saul. What results do you prefer? What paradigm of warfare will you choose? What kind of warrior do you want to be?
