I do web surfing or checking for information on websites at places like Panera Bread, McDonald's, or Starbucks. They each offer free internet wi-fi access. Which device is best for using at places like these?

I prefer the iPad because it is more convenient than a laptop. With the iPad, you press the start button and immediately it is on. Just as quickly, press the start button and it is off. You can even leave it running in a briefcase shoulder bag while you take a break. Let's face it, if you get free refills on coffee at Panera (they have great coffee!), and you get several cups, you will need to get up to use the restroom. It takes a while to pack up a laptop, but with the iPad, I just put it in my leather shoulder briefcase bag, and I can be off to the restroom. When I come back, it is ready to use immediately if I decided to turn it off.

If you have spent much time on a computer at a public internet place, you may have put off using the restroom to keep from having to pack up your laptop. This can be quite uncomfortable. You may kind of run to the restroom, if you don't want to take your laptop with you. Hopefully when you get back, it will still be there. I have seen people ask total strangers to watch their computer while they use the restroom. What good does that do? How do they know the person watching isn't a thief?

So, for convenience, I would choose the iPad. If you need to use Flash Player, so far iPad is not able to do that. I have heard Apple doesn't want flash player for security reasons. That may well be true, but if you need Flash Player, you may have to choose a laptop instead of the iPad. But there could be an alternative. Sometimes, producers that use a flash player, will also offer their media in a source that is compatible with the iPad. Check for your source on iTunes, you will likely find something similar there.
