Another thing that you can do is take advantage of the process that it takes for them to access your free product. Set up a page where you capture their name and e-mail address, so you can add them to your mailing list.
If that's all you want to do, then fine just set up a capture page and after they sign up redirect them to the download page. There are other things that you can do, however.
Instead of having them go directly to the download page after they sign up for your mailing list, you can redirect them somewhere else before they go to the download page. You can take them to a one-time-offer page instead.
You might have another product or service that is relevant to the product that you're giving away for free. You simply redirect them to this one-time-offer sales page after they sign up for your mailing list. If they buy, great, then give them access to everything, if they don't allow them a link at the bottom where they can simply go to the download page of your free product.
