subject: A Chin Implant Can Create A Dramatic Improvement In Facial Profile And Balance [print this page]

In cosmetic surgery, cheek augmentation may be used at the same time with other facial rejuvenation techniques or enhancement procedures such as nasal contouring or face lift surgery. The procedure may also be performed alone to produce a desirable aesthetic change in which the cheek region will be augmented or enhanced. High cheek bones can be a desirable trait in people that not everyone is born with. Furthermore, as part of the process of aging, people tend to lose the youthful fullness that is underneath the cheeks. This can lead to a person's cheeks appearing "hollowed."

For men, cheek augmentation will be performed by placing the cheek implants over the malar bones and creating a more assertive, masculine appearance. In women the cheek implant will change an oval shaped, long face into a more attractive heart shape. Similarly, sub-malar implants will be used in women and men to fill in the concavity or hollowness that is below the cheeks. Thereby creating a more energetic and youthful appearance.

Cheek implants will be inserted through small incisons that have been created on the inside of the upper lip and they will heal in roughly one week. Being a relatively minor procedure, cheek augmentation may be performed using only local anesthesia or just a slightly deeper sedation for patient comfort. Most of the cheek implants will be constructed from solid silicone which will adhere to the underlying bones and will be very difficult to feel. While they are rare, complications may include displacement or infection of the implant that requires a repositioning or possibly a removal.

Over the years, the science and art of facial contouring with cheek implants has evolved significantly. There are now many shapes, sizes, and styles to choose from. A successful outcome of the surgery requires the correct choice in shape and size of the implant. And lastly, having the implant placed in the right location.

A weak or small chin, much like a disproportionate nose, is capable of affecting the overall harmony of one's face. Whether the procedure is performed at the same time as a face lift or rhinoplasty, or even as a separate procedure, a chin implant is capable of dramatically improving the facial profile of a person. The implant will be inserted generally through a small incision beneath one's chin. Cosmetic surgeons will commonly use silastic anatomic shaped chin implants because they produce a very natural feel and look.

Sometimes a cosmetic surgeon will use mersilene mesh style chin implants which will allow an in-growth of your own tissue. The implant will be placed over a person's bone of their lower mandible, along the border of the chin in a very precise pocket. It will then be secured in a central position with a temporary suture. This procedure can most often be done with intravenous or local anesthesia. A patient will almost always be able to return home directly after the surgery.
