subject: What Home Products Do You Waste Your Money On [print this page] If you took a good long look at the list of things you buy for a whole year that you use in your home that you could likely do without, you might be really amazed at how much money could have been saved for something more important. When people go to the big discount department stores and even the grocery stores, they can tend to buy impulsively or frivolously and before they realize it they have spent twice as much as they originally planned. If you go to the grocery store and half of what you bring home is not even food, you might want to learn to take a list and stick to it.
We have all fallen into the trap that television commercials tempt us with. Ingenious products and gadgets they make us think that we can not do without. When we get to the stores we will find they they are a lot of times over priced and over rated. For example: You might love those new fangled mops, brooms and dusters that promise you a cleaner home environment because they have pads that must be changed each time you use it and sometimes more than once to clean a good size floor. Do they really get your floor that much cleaner than a traditional mop and broom? Anyway, if you have a few kids running around, how long is it going to stay clean anyway? To use these new mops and and sweepers you must continuously buy new cleaning pads and they are not cheap for something you dirty up and throw away. The dusters that claim to work so much better than others might be alright, but for the price, a damp cloth gives you the same clean for nothing.
Everyone wants their house to smell fresh and clean. All of the new plug in air fresheners do work alright, but they are really not that magnificent for the cost. The thing about buying these new products is that in order for them to work well, you have to continue to buy the overpriced refills. When you open your windows and let in fresh air when you can, are careful to use exhaust fans when you cook, and ban smokers to the outside, you can keep your house smelling pretty fresh with just the scented cleaning products you use. Carpet fresheners work well and last a good while too. One box of this will go a long way for a lot less money.
Garbage bags are another source of wasted money sometimes. Now, if you are throwing away some heavy duty trash, then you might need a more expensive bag, but for most daily home trash, a good bargain bag will serve just as well. After all, they are all just plastic and can be prone to break if overfilled and they are all going to be thrown away. Using plastic recycle bins will save the planet and the money you spend on garbage bags.
What it all boils down to is once you have spent that money and used that product or continue to buy refills of some kind for a product, that money is gone forever. If you want your money to last longer and go further, be careful and really think about the purchases you make at any store. Ask yourself if you really need it first of all and then ask yourself if a cheaper brand will serve you just as well. You might find that in another year's time you will have cut down on a lot of things you once thought were necessities.
