subject: 110% Is The New 100% [print this page]

Top achievers and peak performers have one ability: The ability to do 110% with 100%. What is this and how can we do it?

Let me start with an example. Imagine you have a task you need to complete. You can just do it. You can do it well. You can make true effort and do it really well. You can give your all and do it to the top level.

That is what top achievers do. At every little thing they do, they give their all. How is this different, however? I mean, if you give 50%, you do 50%, if you give 100%, you get 100%, right?

Wrong. There are two dimensions to a task. The first 80 or 90% you do take some effort. However, the last step, the extra mile is not 10%. It"s a whole new 100%. You complete 90% of a task just using normal knowledge, normal actions, but to complete the last 10% you have to know the same knowledge twice or thrice as well, you have to work twice or thrice as hard. The last 10% are like the final exam.

However, when you cross those 10%, you don"t just complete 100%. You complete 110% or even 200%, or even maybe 1000%. Because in order to complete the last 10%, you have to go beyond the task. In order to complete the first 90% of the task, you just have to take action. In order to complete the last 10%, you have to take infinite action, you have to understand what you"re doing to the true core.

And when you do that, you become bigger than the task itself. When you make 90% effort, you produce 90% results. When you make 100% effort, you produce infinite results.

Think about this in practical terms. You have to develop a product. So you study a market. The first 90% is researching the basic market, and making the basic product. However, in order to bring a product from 90% to 100%, you have to study the market to the core. You have to know each sub area, its size, its offer and demand, every little bit. You have to know your product to the core, you have to know everything.

But if you do, you didn"t just create your product. You have enough knowledge and power now to understand any product of the same kind, any market of the same kind.

You see where I"m getting at? 90% is like the border. From 0 to 90 you just have to be normal. From 90 to 100 you have to become excellent. And when you become excellent, you don"t stop at 100. You can go much further beyond that.

This can be applied to anything in your life.

If you"re practicing a sport, just doing the usual routines very well can get you to 90% easily. But in order to achieve 100%, you have to grind everything down to its core. What are you doing in terms of body mechanics? What are your habitual mental states? What is it you do in every single case? When you understand that, you can reach 100%, and go much beyond that.

In a relationship, it"s easy to have a good relationship, achieve 90% of its potential if you just do reasonable or large effort. However, in order to achieve 100% of the potential of your relationship, you have to understand your partner to the deepest part, you have to be willing to make effort to the deepest level. And when you do reach 100%, you can reach much more than 100%.

There are countless examples I could use here.

This could be a byproduct of Pareto"s principle, in the 90%, 10%. Let"s call it a corollary. 90% is the 10%, and 110% is the new 100%.

This fits into many theories of nowadays, such as that there is no "bad, good, and great", various groups. There is bad/good/very good, and there"s excellent. Two groups.
