subject: Enjoyable Scotland Vacations And Loch Ness, Highlands [print this page]

Scotland is a very good vacation destinationScotland is a very good vacation destination. It is hugely popular with mountain climbers, hikers, hill-walkers, ramblers and other visitors who enjoy this type of vacation. The vast majority visitors enjoy the varying and gorgeous countryside which has a useful selection of sites to visit including some rather famous, and imposing, areas of outstanding beauty. One of these sites which is, most likely the most well-known is Loch Ness and the famous Loch Ness Monster. In the article below I introduce this most enthralling Loch Ness as a vacation destination.

Intensely deep and atmospheric, Loch Ness is a extensive expanse of water located in the awesome Highlands of Scotland pretty close to the city of Inverness (see below). Surrounded by the most beautiful countryside, which features lush areas of forest, mountains blanketed in heather, the loch is most famous for being the home of the Loch Ness Monster who is affectionately called Nessie.

The loch Ness monster is first documented in history in the story of the life of Saint Columba by Saint Adamnan. It is said that the revered saint forced a sea monster back into waters of the loch after it had been frightening one of his men.

In the 1930s a road was built which ran alongside the loch. After only a few years in 1934 stories about sightings of an enormous aquatic monster began to feature in the media.

Inverness, widely known as the capital city of the Highlands, was eventually granted city status in two thousand and one and at the moment is the only city in the Scottish Highlands. Uniquely the city has no statutory boundaries which causes problems for folk estimating population. The estimations are made less accurate because the city's population is on the increase, Inverness has the highest growth rate in the UK. One thing we can say for certain is that the city has a very happy population, in a 2008 survey by the Telegraph.co.uk, about the quality of life in 189 cities in Britain, Inverness came 5th. So I think we can safely state that Inverness is a pretty alright city in which to live and this is probably one of the factors which make Inverness amazingly popular with tourists. Luckily there is a large number of guesthouses and hotels in Inverness with the majority being available to book online.

An important fact to remember is that the airport for Inverness is, near enough, 7 miles east of the city at Dalcross. It is relatively easy to catch a bus to the small but busy airport which is fairly reasonable. If you require a map of the area then you can get them for free at the tourist office, in the center of town. While you are staying in Inverness you should make a note to visit Inverness Castle, Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, the Mercat Cross and 'stone of tubs' especially the Castle Garrison Encounter, an enjoyable interactive experience.

If you are considering having a vacation in Scotland based in Loch Ness and Inverness then you will find Inverness bed and breakfast online by by placing "Inverness hotel accommodation" or "Inverness bed and breakfast" into your favorite search engine (the quotation marks can help enormously).
