subject: Teaching Dog Heel.... Apply These Steps! [print this page]

When teaching dog heel, it's important to start off early as possible. They learn and absorb a lot of information when there young, much like children. Teaching dog heel is a great way to get the dog to meet you back and stay at your left side. It is also known as the finished command. I'll save you some time right now, make sure you learn the come command before you start anything, it really helps to speed the process up a bit. So teaching dog heel is not as difficult as you may think it is. There's just a few basic steps and once you've learned those, you just have to repeat them until the dog catches on. There's no set time that it takes, since all dogs are different.

When teaching dog heel, we will first start off by making sure that the dog is on his leash. Use it to guide him in this command. Don't scare the dog by yelling or tugging hard on his leash, if you do, he won't learn this. Have a treat in your left hand so that when you praise him for doing it right, he also gets that tasty treat. Have the dog sitting in front of you, then your going to want to start by stepping back, using your right leg. When teaching dog heel, bring the leash about half way around your back, expose to him that you have his treat, by doing this your going to guide him to your left side. Once he's there, your going to say heel and if he does this tell him he's a good dog and of course treat him. Teaching dog heel is simple as that. Just repeat this enough and he will catch on. There's a free dog lesson video in the link below, feel free to check it out.
