A Brief Explanation of Identity Management and ISO-IEC 27001 Certification

We have truly arrived in the digital age and everything from the Internet to cash machines have used computers to enhance our lives. The only problem with all of the advancements in information technology is that they have led to new threats.

You constantly hear about identity theft and people's personal data being lost these days. This just shows that with all the information technology advancements that have been made it has resulted in new security problems. Despite the data protection act and programmers best efforts to prevent attacks from happening, mistakes do still happen which is why information security companies work tirelessly on making and maintaining the security of their systems.

Many resilience and security consultants and digital security services are now being provided to help businesses build systems that have good information assurance and identity management. Identity management is the management of user credentials held in a directory that represents items identified in real life. In layman's terms, this means management of an information system that allows users to change passwords and manage data whist providing sufficient security.

ISO/IEC 27001 is an information security management system (ISMS) standard published in October 2005. The guidelines found in ISO/IEC 27001 are designed to help organisations that develop systems that have access to sensitive information. When a company gains ISO/IEC 27001 certification this then means that they build their systems to this standard.
