subject: So You Want To Quit Smoking [print this page]

Quitting is usually one of the easiest things in the world to do. After all, all it consists of is making the conscious effort that you are just going to not do something, right? Well, in most cases, yeah, that would be true, but in the case of quitting smoking...well that is another story entirely. Quitting takes a lot of determination, support, and will power, but it is one of the most rewarding experiences a person who smokes can have, especially in terms of health. If you are a person who wishes to quit smoking, but are not sure how to go about this, then here are some tips that should make the task a bit easier on you.

The first thing you have to keep in mind is that you are about to embark on a very difficult journey: a journey to a smoke free life. In order to reach that goal, you need to mentally prepare yourself as much as you can for the difficulty you will face in resisting the urge to smoke. The next thing you need to do is focus on getting yourself out of the mindset of being a smoker. The first step to breaking that mindset is to tell yourself that you are no longer a smoker, and that nicotine is kicked out of your life. It does not matter if you have smoked within the hour of making the decision to quit, you must still tell yourself this. After all, you have to start somewhere.

Another important thing to do is to take your cigarettes, your lighters, your ash trays, tobacco, and anything else you may use for smoking and then just chuck them right in the garbage. Since you are no longer a smoker, you no longer need them in your life, and as such they are expendable. The next thing you need to do is figure out whether or not you would like to use nicotine gums or patches to aid you as you try to quit smoking. Keep in mind, however, that these are not permanent fixes for your smoking problem, and are only really used to ween you off of nicotine. If not used correctly, they can backfire and make your cravings even stronger.

Remember, the road to a smoke free life is not going to be easy, but anything in life worth having is worth fighting for, and as such, it is important to keep yourself motivated.
