subject: Workout O Phobia [print this page] When it comes to ultimate healthiness, which always includes working out, there is a tendency to say what if. I have gone through a number of these what ifs in previous posts, but the root of them has not really been exposed. So what is it? In my estimation, its the fear of doing what's good for you-the fear of doing what's necessary to maintain and escalate your vitality!
This is so absurd to me after 45 years of healthiness, that I can almost not write about it without smiling. How can a low fat low carb diet, a wisely picked assortment of supplements and a daily 60 to 90 minute workout be bad for anyone?
The most difficult of these is the workout portion. Probably this is because it takes time and is uncomfortable for the first two months or so. Too it costs money (health club dues). This it is not very popular. In other words, not many of your friends relatives and neighbors do it.
Those are the superficial causes. The deeper ones, I believe, have to do with a basic fear of exertion. Even one of my MDs is like this. It is as if he is expecting something very bad to happen to me because of my daily conditioning.
This country is in love with R&R rest and relaxation. This is the supposed good life which will get you comfortably and healthily to the end of your days. It even insures that you will have a place in the sun (assuming your investing works out) when you finally are able to retire and soak up the rays in Florida or Arizona. Isn't that what you see the most when advertisers talk about mature adults?
Certainly you never see a vigorous octogenarian out running or swimming. That would be unthinkable. Such strenuous stuff is only for their great grandkids in high school. That may change in the next hundred years or so, but that's the way it is right now. Anyone who has a problem with this is considered odd or strange (me, perhaps). What is normal right and even American is to take care of yourself(don't overdue)so that you can rest up to die!
Friends, I am not interested in this kind of retirement. I'm not interested in any kind of retirement if that means hanging it all up and waiting around for my funeral. Where are you at?
