Emai List Building - Is it Really a Profitable Move to Build Your Own Lists?

The most recent question was as follows: With all of the social marketing websites like MySpace and FaceBook, is it really worth the effort to go through the trouble of building an email list anymore?

I found the question interesting; it was as though this person did not realize that there is a huge difference between the social media audience and those with an interest in subscribing to an e-mail list on any given topic. In fact, this is the truth. People become involved in social media circles largely out of peer pressure and to be seen, while those who subscribe to an e-mail list are doing so for informational or entertainment purposes.

When you are building an email list, you must take great strides to protect the identity and e-mail addresses of those on your list which makes that list private in nature and not directly or indirectly related to social marketing web sites at all.

That said, whether or not building an email list is worth it is largely an individual decision. If you have any need to communicate with your audience (who may or may not be potential customers) on an ongoing and regular basis, then I suggest that you do incorporate the building of an email list into the work you are already doing on your website. The setup process is simple and once complete requires very little by way of maintenance.
