Membership sites have 2 kinds.

Paid sites and free sites. These membership websites have one thing in common. Their memberships are composed of individuals who have the same needs or share a similar interests.

Even without paying for a membership, one can still buy a domain, put up a website and still be able to select who to admit and not. This is made when the revenue is intended to come from sales to members after they sign up the website. There are network sites that are available for free that you can use. Group sites on MSN and on Yahoo are examples of free membership websites. It costs nothing to set up these sites and there is no charge at all for a person to sign up.

Paid administrator or moderators are also not needed from these websites.

Every site has its own set of rules and code of conduct for people who want to sign up. The site subjects are numerous and diverse. There are a lot of support sites for those with health problems or concerns and for persons who have suffered the loss of loved ones. Sites for those who are into crafts like woodworking and quilting are also presented.

There are websites for those who like traveling.

There are sites for different age groups from teens to seniors. The sites include chat software and a limited amount of space for posting photos, documents and links per member. If there's one thing these free websites don't have, it is access to lists and specialized data like music lessons.

On the other hand, paid for membership websites are put up by people or ventures to make money by giving information and access to numerous fields of instructions, specific data or lists. The operation of the membership sites are either done by those who own the site or those who are hired by the site owner to check and look after the site. The subjects are wider and even more mixed and undoubtedly more specialized than those from free membership sites.
