The age-related macular degeneration or AMD is type of sickness, which generally grows with age. In other words, the disease generally affects those people who are old or between the age of forty to sixty. The disease damages the power of vision and the affected person losses the sharpness of his/her eyesight. The person who is affected can only use his central vision to finish the normal daily tasks like writing, reading and even driving. He gets tremendous problems to see sharp things.

The AMD generally affects the macula. The macula is situated in the central part of the retina. The retina is very sensitive to light. This is also a very important organ as it changes an image into electrical inclinations and sends them to brain. There are two types of AMD, Wet AMD and Dry AMD. If some one is suffering with Wet AMD, he can easily loss the central vision. This condition occurs if blood vessels grow abnormally behind the retina and under the macula. These kinds of blood vessels are very fragile and can leak blood and other types of fluids. The excessive blood and fluid can increase the macula and can increase its usual place. Slowly, it damages the macula.

If the age-related macular degeneration is dry, it leads to a slow break down in the macula. Thus, it affects the functioning of the macula and diminishes the central vision. Medical experts observe that the dry macula occurs first in one eye and later, it affects the next eye. There is not any particular cause for a dry AMD. The person suffering with the infection can have blurred vision. There can be a blind spot in the middle of the eye, which can be a sign of vision loss.
