Details

Domestic violence is documented as a serious societal problem in the United States.

Research informs that between 3.3 million and 10 million children in the United States are exposed to domestic violence every year. (Straus) In a decade of empirical studies point out that this exposure can have major negative effects on children's behavioral, emotional, social, and cognitive development. (Edleson 845)

Children respond to their environment in varied ways, and reactions can differ depending on the child's gender and age. Children experiencing family violence are more likely to develop social, psychological, emotional, and or behavioral problems than those who are not. Recent research indicates that children who witness domestic violence show more nervousness, low self-esteem, depression, and anger and personality problems than children who do not witness violence in the home. The ordeal they experience can show up in behavioral, emotional, social and physical disturbances that effect their growth and can continue into adulthood.
