Are your potential subscribers on social networking sites? If your ideal subscriber is not on social networking sites then it's not right for you.

If you're not a newsletter publisher the best way to find out is to start with Facebook. Open up a little profile on Facebook if you don't already have one. Fill out a personal profile. This is a test to see if you're doing it or not, so don't upload your photo or do anything, just give the basic information and get a profile.

As soon as you have a profile, you can start searching. You search in Facebook for groups and fan pages of what your target market would be interested in. In other words, let's say you're targeting house painters. What kind of stuff would house painters be looking at?

Maybe they've got a fan page that's about the business of painting houses or they're under contractors, that kind of stuff. Do searches that your target would be interested in.

If you're dealing with more of a consumer target market, let's say you're targeting pregnant women; you would probably search for mothers to be. If you are targeting pregnant or young mothers with small children, Facebook was the fastest growing medium for all of these mothers and stay-at-home moms are discovering social networking as a way to relieve boredom in their life. There are a lot of them on there.

So, find where they are and then you see if there are any groups or fan pages. If there are no groups or fan pages, you may not be searching correctly. Sit down and brainstorm what the stuff they would be interested in and put down keywords.

If you still don't get any that doesn't mean they're not doing social networking, but what it means is that Facebook is not what they're doing. Facebook is so big, chances are if any group is doing social networking they're probably on Facebook along with something else.

It may be that they're on more of a niche social networking site, so that's the first thing to determine that maybe Facebook is not the one.

The second thing that it could be is they're just not online. You're going out for a target market that is not comfortable being online. If that's the case you should not be on social networking.

If you can't find them on Facebook, you've done other searches and you can't find them then I would say they probably aren't that interested in doing social networking; therefore, it wouldn't be the right marketing for you.

Is your target market online and are they using social networking?

Are you going to do it? Is this suited for your personality? This is important.

Don't discount this. Social networking is very easy for many because that's what they do in real life. Networking in real life is easy for some. Therefore, doing this in the online world isn't much of a leap.

If this is something that you try and absolutely hate, it's painful for you, you have one of two options.

- One option is not to do it at all.

- Second option is to outsource it.

There are lots of places to outsource. If you outsource you at least get the visibility, credibility, some of the traffic. You just won't make all the connections, but you'll get three out of the four.

You will get some connections out of this, it's just a matter of following up with them and that's how it would work. It's not impossible to do it if this isn't your personality but you have to think of it in another way.
