Authorities impose curfew Srinagar on Ashura

Srinagar: Curfew Friday imposed curfew in Srinagar's Shia populated areas in order to thwart the community from taking out Muharram procession in the city.
It also put chairman, Hurriyat Conference (M), Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest preventing him from offering Friday prayers in Jamia Masjid, Srinagar.
Areas falling under the jurisdiction of seven police stations M R Gung, Safakadal, Khanyar, Nowhatta, Maisuma, Kralkhud and Kothibagh that house the majority of the Shia population in the city were put under curfew to thwart Muharram procession.
Due to curfew in the city majority of shops, business establishments and private institution remained closed while as traffic didn't ply at major roads of the Srinagar, crippling normal life in these areas.
As per the directions of Jammu and Kashmir Traffic police, vehicular transport wasn't allowed to ply on Jehangir Chowk-Hari Singh High Street Road up to Radio Kashmir Crossing.

Mirwaiz, who had shifted his base to his ancestral Residence, Mirwaiz Manzil, Rajouri Kadal in order to escape house arrest and lead the Friday prayers in Jamia Masjid was taken back to his Nigeen Residence by the police, where he was put under house arrest.
Mirwaiz had appealed people (Muslims) to offer Friday prayers in Jamia Masjid and had threatened to defy curfew and restrictions but authorities cordoned off the Grand Mosque and adjoining areas early morning to prevent people from offering congregation prayers.
A joint team of Police and CRPF personnel, eyewitnesses said, came to Mirwaiz Manzil late night and arrested the Hurriyat chairman along with his dozens of activists.
While the chairman was put under house arrest his supporters were lodged in different police stations of the city.
