subject: Successfully Starting Your Own Business [print this page]

Starting your own business can be very stressful. If you are starting a business that you are passionate about you should take the time to set up your company so that it is lucrative.

There are many different precautions that you should take. After all of the time, hard work and money that goes into starting a company you do not want to have it fail because of an oversight.

The most important aspect of making your business successful is to find employees that work well for your company. Employees are the most likely people to steal from your company.

With this having been proved time and time again it is important that you find the employees that are honest and hardworking. This is much easier said than done.

First, you are going to want to start with a screening and application process. You may be able to find a standard application on the internet.

If you are opening a branch of a corporation the corporation will provide you with the applications. After giving people the applications you may want to add some addendums.

There are some owners of companies that want to have the applicants also bring a resume. If they bring the resume with them they will be shedding some light on their past and the history of their employment.

You should definitely ask the applicants that you are considering hiring to provide references. If you are going to ask for the references you will want to make sure that you take the time to call them.

Calling the references may seem awkward or uncomfortable but it is necessary to if you are interested in finding the best employees. You will want to ask some specific questions to the employer.

Ask the employer if the applicant in question ever had a problem with honesty. This could include stealing, giving friend's discounts or even calling in sick consistently.

You will also want to ask the previous employers how the applicant in question worked with other employees. Did they cause trouble or where they a peacemaker on the job?

Some employers will be hesitant to give you the truthful answer to your question because they may be worried about the legal repercussions.

Make sure that you ensure the previous employer that all questions and answers will remain anonymous. After you have finished asking your questions make sure that you keep the answers anonymous.

If you choose not to hire someone based on what a previous employer says you do not need to tell the applicant this. You can simply inform them that after looking through and reading his or her resume that they are not the employee you are looking for.

If you are going to be working in a business with highly confidential material or a lot of cash flow you may also want to conduct a background check. Conducting a background check may take quite a while.

Some people prefer to just do drug testing. There are usually many companies around a city that will drug test potential employees for employers.

You can find one of these facilities and ask your applicants to stop by. All they will have to do is either get their urine tested or get their blood tested.

Most employers do not have the money to do a full scale drug test. They are usually just looking for excessive amounts of alcohol or marijuana in an individual's system.

If an applicant has not problem showing up for a drug test with drugs in his or her system you should stray from hiring them. You do not want to be responsible for choices that this person makes on the job while on drugs.

Finding leaders among your applicants is also an important process. Some employers will only higher people into leadership positions if they have previous experience.

Nowadays there are a lot of different programs that can help you train people with the ability to be leaders. Although you may not have the necessary tools you can outsource this responsibility.

If you find a particularly impressive applicant that seems to have great leadership potential you may be able to take them with you to conferences or classes. During these conferences and class you will learn with your new leaders.

The leaders that will lead under you will shape your business. Finding people with the necessary skills and the determination to do good for your company may be hard and time consuming but will be well worth it in the long run.
