subject: Tips To Help Your Child To Do Schoolwork [print this page]

One huge problem for parents is when children refuse to do homework. This is hard to see since seeing children doing well in school is important for many parents. What are some ways of getting your kids to do homework assignments?

The first thing that needs to be done is to be firm. School and learning is important. Make sure that a child who refuses to do homework and gets in trouble at school for not turning in assignments is disciplined at home. If need be, start taking away privileges from the child until the homework is done. This can be as simple as taking away phone or television until homework is finished for the night.

Add in rewards to motivate the child to get the assignments done. Have a fun weekend outing that the child can go on if getting all the homework that week done. These are positive motivations that will associate fun activities with doing well in school.

Contact the teachers of your child and find out what's really going on. There could be some behavioral problems in the classroom that might need to be worked on. Also, you need to know what assignments need to be done so that your child can not hide his homework.

Do the homework with your child. At times, not wanting to do the homework can be a cover for the embarrassment of not understanding it. Give the child some help and guidance that they might need but don't want to ask for.

Look into after school programs or tutors if the material is something that you don't understand as a parent. Many school districts can help a child with homework in areas where the student is having trouble understanding what is going on.

You may have to talk to the school counselors to see if there are deeper issues that are on the child's mind. Homework might not seem like a priority because he or she is dealing with more difficult things in life.
