subject: Maintaining An Air Conditioned Home Does Not Have To Be Hard [print this page]

An air conditioned home is not one of luxury anymore. All over the world people are experiencing the great affects of conditioned air. It is great to know you can come in from the hot air outside and get cooled down quickly. There are few things to remember about maintaining your system though.

The optimum temperature between outside and inside should be 20 degrees for cooling. Cooling your home can actually lessen the effects of pollen during the spring time. Autumn lends itself susceptible to fungi and spores which can also cause difficulty in breathing. Cooling the air can help eliminate the effects of these by clearing the humidity from the air.

Having an air conditioned home means you rely on a thermostat for temperature control that is accurate. The best thermostats are digital thermostats because mercury thermostats can be off between 5 to 10 degrees at any given time. Digital thermostats do not allow the system to turn off and on unexpectedly. Their accuracy is closer to one degree. Your thermostat should be placed on an interior wall located next to the return grill for the best temperature sensing capability.

An air conditioned home also requires some maintenance to keep the unit performing well. Part of that maintenance demands filter changing to keep the air clean and free of dirt. Filter changes should be done on a regularly scheduled basis. Other preventative maintenance should be done on the entire system at least twice a year. This maintenance can be done yourself or by a service technician. Learning to perform your own maintenance can save you money.
