Learning the Piano with These 3 Things
Learning the Piano with These 3 Things

I definitely believe that gone are the days when you need to spend lifetime just to be able to play your favorite music instruments. This is especially true if you want to learn the piano. Before, piano was only for the elite. The instrument itself is expensive and lessons and tutorials are the same. You need to start very young so that you will become one of the virtuosos when you grow up. But today, because of the advancement in technology, synthesizers and keyboards, this made the piano more available to medium class citizens. Nowadays, almost everyone has the same opportunity in piano playing.

I believe that there are three things that you need to have if you want to learn the piano.

First, you need to love the instrument. A desire or passion is needed. Whatever you age is, if you have the passion, I believe that learning an instrument is possible. Of course, you will not become a world class piano player if you start learning at the age of 65, but I believe if you really want to, you can still play some tunes. Learning is easy if the thing that you are learning is your passion. Some people say that they love music but music doesn't like them and that is why they don't get it. I don't believe in that mindset. I think, they don't love it enough.

Second, you need to know how to discipline yourself. This is easy to have if you love what you are doing. But of course, we know that there are many who claimed that they love to play the piano then after two months of piano lesson, they give up. Why is that? It is because learning the piano is like taking yourself in the gym. It is about training and training again about things that you don't know. In the gym, you don't always lift the same amount of weights. As you continue to learn the piano, frustration will always get you. The good thing it, it can a powerful ally. For some, frustration gives more reason to practice more. Yet, there are also some that quits because of frustration. This is why you need to know how to discipline yourself not to quit and to have a constant practice. Your discipline is the determining factor of your improvement. If you don't have a constant practice, of course, you will learn slower. If you are always frustrated instead of being challenged because it is hard to play the piano, eventually, you will lose your passion with your music instrument. Your discipline measures your success.

Third, you need to have a good resource material. Learning the piano by yourself is very much possible. That is how I learned and now I am playing the keyboard most of the time in our church. It is possible but you need to have a good resource. There are many piano lessons out in the market but I believe that the best way to learn is by reading, hearing and seeing. Piano books are not enough. You need to hear the tunes that the books explain. And most important, you need to see it done. The problem is, if you have a good piano book, piano teachers are expensive. It is not practical most of time, especially if you want to do it in your own phase (take it slow or take it fast). Teachers, sometime wants to do it in their own leisure. This is what I like in today's modern era because we have digital books, digital audio and digital videos.
