Are you looking for the full study-abroad experience? Want to make sure you don't miss out on anything? Here's a collection of things a lot of students tend to miss out on during their stay in UK.
Making new friends
Studying in the UK gives you the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life and the best way to make the most of your time here is to expand your friend network. If you are lucky to have friends from your native country around you, you might be tempted to spend most of your time with them. It is okay to hang out with these friends but try not to fall into the trap of getting too comfortable where you don't want to meet new people. You may never have a chance to be around so many different cultures so why not take advantage of it?!
Get all the information you need about UK regulations
Make sure you get all the facts before deciding that study abroad is for you. It's especially important that you take notice of all the rules and regulations involved in studying in the UK. The following are just a few examples:
If renting make sure you register with the local council! Get a letter from your institution to take with you to your council as proof that you are studying in the UK.
If you are in the UK on a student visa, you can only work a limited number of hours per week.
If you work part-time during your studies and summer holidays, before you leave the country you can claim back your taxes.
Know what your visa regulations are before you come. Knowing all the information ahead of time will ensure there are no problems when you get here.
Don't think you can get away with staying past your visa date. If caught you will not be allowed back in the country!
Take advantage of being around English speaking students
It is easy to fall back on your native language but it will serve you best if you speak English as much as possible while in the UK. You learn more about a language if you try and use it in your everyday life. Talk to your classmates, teachers, casual acquaintances and friends in English as much as possible to ensure you get the most out of studying in the UK.
Attend all classes and orientations
Most universities require you to attend all the classes as well as orientations, by putting all your effort in studying while in the UK you have a better chance of getting more out of your time here. The orientations can also be very informative and can provide you with information such as how to open a bank account, how to register with a doctor, what the attractions are in the area and much more.
Participate in all University organised student events
This is a great way to meet other international students as well as new friends. This can be a useful networking tool and can potentially be very helpful if you have questions about studying abroad. These people will be going through the same thing you will so there will usually be an instant bond. In addition to this go out with your friends to pubs and restaurants. Embrace the culture of the UK and start having a little bit of fun. You are here to study but you can take some time out for yourself as well. Of course there should always be a balance between having fun all the time and studying all the time.
Take advantage of being a student
There are many opportunities to travel while you are studying in the UK. This will give you another opportunity to broaden your understanding of other cultures. Student discounts are offered at most shopping malls and buses/trains offer student travel cards at discounted rates.
Apply for extension if you want to stay in the UK
Once you have completed your studies you can apply for a work permit that is valid for up to two years. This is a great opportunity to spend some more time in the UK and to put your studies to good use.
Overall make sure you have a good time, study hard, make as many friends as possible and make sure all the rules are being adhered to. If all of this is taken care of you will get the most out of your studies in the UK and will hopefully provide you with some quality life experience.
