subject: Top Tips To Make Your Move A Smooth Process.
[print this page] Moving home is known to be one of the most stressful experiences anyone undergoes in their life. So anything which helps make things run more smoothly has to be welcomed. As a result, the British Association of Removers, the body which oversees standards in the removals industry, has published a list of five golden rules which, if kept, will ensure a smoother move every time.
Some of these golden rules might seem like common sense, but others might not be so obvious yet will contribute greatly to reducing stress at this already fraught time.
1. Plan your move well in advance
Contact the company you want to help you move at least a month ahead of the big day if possible. It isn't essential at this stage to know the exact date of your move, but even this far ahead, as these are people who carry out removals day-in, day-out, they should be able to give you some worthwhile tips. This will ensure that you can allocate your time effectively, and focus on the main tasks involved.
2. Get someone else to do the packing for you
Make good use of the expertise of your chosen removal company. While we move only a few times in a lifetime, professional removers are doing it for a living, so are bound to take a more organised, methodical approach.
Members of the British Association of Removers (BAR) will have stocks of all the appropriate packing materials to hand so that you don't have to search for these yourself. Trained removal staff will also know how to safely package all your items to be moved, so eliminating those niggling worries that any precious items could be damaged.
3. Cover yourself against possible risks
A member company of the BAR must abide by the standards the body lays down for insurance purposes, which includes a minimum amount of cover, and insurance against specific risks.
Accidents can happen, no matter how carefully and methodically all the packing is done, so as part of the preparations it's a good idea to discuss the insurance cover which a BAR member offers, as it is specifically designed to cover most eventualities.
4. Any day but a Friday
The traffic is always worse, which automatically means schedules will slip, and if other people in a chain are moving the same day, this increases the risk of disruption. Some companies even offer discounts for choosing another weekday, so it could save money as well as time.
Taken individually, each of these steps can make the difference between enjoying a good moving experience, and having to endure a bad one. But when brought together, the difference really can be noticed, especially in the levels of stress encountered!
