A benefit to help Lathern raise money to fight against cancer was held. As many as two dozen individuals and businesses donated money or merchandise. Charity events for Lathern snared four bands, a raffle, a silent auction and a bake sale.She spent the $10,000 raised to have her breast augmentation surgery.
The scam came to light when Latherns surgeon expressed concerns that her $6800 breast augmentation surgery had been paid from the stolen funds. Lathern faked her cancer story and used the donation amount to upgrade her healthy breasts.
James pack, McLennan County Sheriff said that Lathern wanted to have breast implants to try and save her 7 month marriage. Trista said that as she and her husband were having marital problems, and by telling him that she had cancer would get them closer together. She later confessed that she had given $3,500 to a local plastic surgeon for an augmentation and had a bilateral augmentation performed in Austin, Texas, which cost her around $6800.
She has been charged with theft by deception over $1500 but under $20,000/
