NLP largely consists of models explaining that in different situations how humans think and experience the world surrounding them. Among psychotherapists at large level its consideration is controversial, as it is said that it is a controversial approach to psychotherapy understandings. It has not been given very much importance in conventional social sciences. However, it has not been able to strengthen its models with enough and new evidences since its start. It is largely dealing in teaching and educating people towards self-awareness techniques so that they can keep themselves proper in situations where they did not behave proper.
Its impact in psychological books and psychotherapy counseling is limited. However Neuro Linguistic Programmers claim that they have developed such techniques that they can change emotions, thoughts, and behaviors of people effectively. They can educate people to self-awareness techniques so that they can overcome their fears and phobias. In this way they can help people in spending a healthier and better life.
However its importance in psychotherapist community is only to this limit that they say they are practicing it. Under the claim, what works rather than what should work, it teaches that human beings do not pay much attention to what goes in their minds while they are facing certain situations. So after getting information from different people who behave differently in a certain situation, we can help those who did not behave properly in that particular situation. But this thought is more practical and not experimentally observational from scientific point of view. Therefore though Neuro linguistic Programming has a term 'Neuro' in it but it cannot be legitimized as a Neuro science form and hence it is not considered as a scientifically respectable branch of science. Largely concerning with practical matters, mostly NLP is considered as a study of communication, which can build an organization for dealing with specific situations.
Very much controversy started when Bandler wanted to claim the term Neuro Linguistic Programming as his sole property, but Neuro Linguistic Programming Community stated that the term Neuro Linguistic Programming is a generally built up term from the collective work of those who surrounded the two founders, Richard Bandler and John Rider, in early days and contributed their role in its progress. Therefore it cannot be considered as the property of some one who claims the term. Another controversy about Bandler is that he has earned lots of money through seminars for promoting Neuro Linguistic Programming techniques while the importance of this way of treatment in different sections of psychotherapy are limited.
