There are 180,000 charities in the UK and most of the money donated (67%) ends up with the "Big Players" who make-up just 1% of those charities, leaving the majority (99% ) of other charities to share what is left over.
Unlike the larger national charities who have the budget and marketing expertise to ensure their names are everywhere, local independents ,tend to live a hand to mouth existence, 100% reliant on kind donations. At the same time these lesser bodies work their hearts out, right at the centre of the very communities their objective is to support.
Freshfields Animal Rescue's' Liverpool site rescues and re-homes in the region of 1200 animals and birds annually. As well as dogs, cats, rabbits, other small animals and birds they have at present 52 hedgehogs in residence along with a number of wild birds.
"People ask me why we need money to survive, as an example, when someone dumps an old or abused dog, the package we provide for the welfare of the animal inevitably incurs many costs including medical treatment, vaccinations, flea treatments & food, along with the costs of running the centre like heating to keep them warm, it all adds up and is even worse in this cold weather" Says Helen Stanbury manager of Freshfields Animal rescue centre.
Freshfields Animal Rescue are imploring the people of Merseyside and Lancashire to wave the banner for Local' charities! Helen says "It is amazing how generous some people are, but with their heart strings being pulled in so many directions by the pleas of big, small and international charities we desperately need people to help on a more local scale. It is imperative that we are not forgotten in these dire times, we ourselves need help, to help the less fortunate animals in the area"
