People nowadays are largely concerned about how they look physically, how much they weigh and their body shape, but they lack the same zeal when it comes to the other areas of their lives. While it is good to take care of our bodies, as there are a lot of people who don't, it is also important to enrich the other areas of our lives in order to achieve optimum health. This is the holistic approach to health.
The normal tendency of people when wanting to get healthy is to watch what they eat and to enroll in a gym. This is normal as different lifestyles call for different duties and responsibilities that are very demanding of our time. But honestly speaking, how effective is exercise or weight lifting if you always tend to be stressed mentally, emotionally or otherwise?
We invest our time with friends and families as humans because of our need to belong and to love. However, as people, we also have psychological and spiritual needs, and I'm not just talking about going to church.
Although we use our brains every day, especially to perform our jobs, we seldom use it to engage in fun and happy activities that can both enrich our minds and relieve it from stress. When was the last time you read and finished a book just for the fun of it?
Engaging in stress-releasing activities like these can greatly contribute to our overall wellbeing as individuals. Another aspect that we tend to disregard is our spiritual aspect. Maybe we pray and go to church every Sunday, but when was the last time you really stopped, meditated and just quieted your heart?
There are a lot of classes available nowadays that specialize in these soul-enriching activities such as yoga, which is great for the mind, body and soul. Only when we approach health in a holistic approach can we truly be healthy.
