Srinagar: Police on Thursday claimed to have unearthed a big scam by recovering nearly 1000 quintals of rice, 300 bags of sugar and 500 bags of flour from a godown at Moominabad, Batamaloo after it raided it in the afternoon.
It also said that stitching machines used for repackaging, weighing machines and 1000 empty bags were also seized on the spot.
The items supplied by the Food Corporation of India, police said, were meant for distribution through Consumer Affairs and Protection Department outlets but were fraudulently sold to the public.
The breakthrough was achieved after a load carrier carrying some bags of rice, sugar and flour driven by one Nazir Ahmad Khan S/O Ghulam Qadir Khan resident of Batamaloo was intercepted at Hyderpora who in interrogation led police to the Moominabad Batamaloo.
A police team led by SP North, Mohammad Irshad along with other officers of police station, Sadder and police station, Batamaloo raided the godown owned by Mohammad Afzal Dar at Moominabad and recovered 1000 quintals of rice, 300 bags of sugar and 500 bags of flour from the spot.
The items, according to the police officials, were procured from CAPD outlets and were repackaged in the godown and rebranded as well.
"The re-stitched bags of rice, sugar and flour were then sold to the public under the brand name Double Apple Brand, 5-star White Cane Sugar and RFM, Maida for rice, sugar and flour respectively," a police official said.
Sand and clay, he said, was also mixed with the repackaged bags in order to add to the weight of the items.
Police has filed the case under the FIR No. 265/2010 under section 409, 460, 120-B in police station sadder and investigations in this regard have been started.
It merits a mention that eight FIRs have been registered in different police stations against the CAPD and FCI this year thus far. (AIP)
