To make this easier to illustrate, let us assume each item is 5000 points and the ranks go up at 5000, 10000, 15000 points.
You need three items, so it may seem easier to just wait until you have the 15000 points. However, the trick is to purchase your items each as soon as you get the 5000 required, one at a time.
When you get 5000 points your Abyss Rank goes up to 8 (since it counts down). You then spend those points to obtain your new item, and your rank goes back up to 9! This allows you to start over again, earning more Abyss Points than you would if you were 8 again.
The only time you should let your Abyss Points rack up is when you already have all of the items you need from the vendor and are ready to work towards getting your rank up as high as possible.
