A step to conserve water is the step to secure the future. The most essential among all the natural resources on earth is water. A drop of water is worth more than a sack of gold for the thirsty man. Water conservation can be defined as, a reduction in water use accomplished by implementation of water conservation or water efficiency measures; or, improved water management practices that reduce or enhance the beneficial use of water. A water conservation measure is an action, behavioral change, device, technology, or improved design or process implemented to reduce water loss, waste, or use. Water efficiency is a tool of water conservation. That results in more efficient water use and thus reduces water demand.

Tips for water conservation:

1. When washing dishes by hand, don't let the water run while washing. Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water.

2. Some refrigerators, air conditioners and ice-makers are cooled with wasted flows of water. Consider upgrading with air-cooled appliances for significant water savings.

3. Run your clothes washer and dishwasher only when they are full. You can save up to 1,000 gallons a month.

4. Shorten your shower by a minute or two and you'll save up to 150 gallons per month.

5. Use the garbage disposal sparingly, instead of chucking out waste into the sink because it needs lot of water to throw it.

6. When you save water, you save money on your utility bills too. Saving water is easy for everyone to do.

7. Monitor your water bill for unusually high use. Your bill and water meter are tools that can help you discover leaks.

8. Water your lawn and garden in the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler to minimize evaporation.

9. Wash your fruits and vegetables in a pan of water instead of running water from the tap. Collect the water you use for rinsing fruits and vegetables, and then reuse it to water plants.

10. If your shower fills a one-gallon bucket in less than 20 seconds, replace the showerhead with a water-efficient model. Upgrade older toilets with water efficient models.

11. When buying new appliances, select those that offer cycle and load size adjustments. They're more water and energy efficient devices.

12. Designate one glass for your drinking water each day or refill a water bottle. This will cut down on the number of glasses to wash.

13. Turn off the water while brushing your teeth and, turn off the water while you wash your hair and while you shave and which saves up to many gallons a month.

14. Water only when necessary. More plants die from over watering than from under-watering.

15. One more way to get eight glasses of water a day is to reuse the water left over from cooked or steamed foods to start a scrumptious and nutritious soup.

16. Share water conservation tips with friends and neighbors.
